DNA methylation is a much-studied but poorly understood epigenetic mark with a clear role in transcriptional silencing, especially of transposable elements. In plants, methylation is frequently stably inherited through meiosis. Work on Arabidopsis thaliana DNA methylation has been shown to reflect origin of sampled plants, which could reflect genetic regulation, or and epigenetic memory. I will discuss what we have learned about these patterns, and their causes.
