Spatial transcriptomics of mammalian tissues

Mammalian tissues are composed of repeating anatomical units that are polarized by morphogens or directional blood flow. As a result, cells at different tissue coordinates sub-specialize in distinct physiological functions, a phenomenon termed ‘zonation’. I will describe approaches based on single cell RNA sequencing, single molecule transcript imaging and spatial transcriptomics to characterize zonation in the key metabolic organs – the liver and intestine. I will discuss emerging design principles that facilitate optimal organ function through spatial division of labor. I will also describe the impact of zonation on diverse pathological states.
