The tomato plant grows as a vine with reproductive branches intervene vegetative ones at regular intervals. Such shoot architecture characterized all cultivated tomatoes until 70 years ago when a determinate bush-like shoot was introduced, accounting for 50% of the tomatoes grown today. The contrasting growth habits are tuned by a balance between the growth hormone florigen and its counteracting anti florigen gene products. This balance impacts many aspects of the shoot, however, it is not essential for any particular developmental process. Thus, manipulation of florigen and its antagonist levels became favored targets for plant breeders, accounting for the success of strawberries, roses, soybeans and other plants as modern crops. Understanding and tuning the florigen/anti-florigen balance can generate diverse shoot architectures and may facilitate “domestication” of untamed plants.
