The Botanical Garden of Rio de Janeiro (JBRJ) is a Brazilian national
institution focused on the study and conservation of plant biodiversity. The
research structure is composed by a Laboratory Network with 6 thematic
labs, and taxonomists and ecologists working in collaboration in many
research projects and scientific collections. This 208-year old institution
has worked to accomplish Convention of Biological Diversity (CBD) and
International Union for International Union for Conservation of Nature
(IUCN) goals with important publications. One of the laboratories, the
Molecular Biology Lab supports different genetic studies. The mangrove
has been studied for epigenetic and genetic diversity in this laboratory. An
epigenetic study has shown dissociation between the genetic and
epigenetic components of the diversity of Laguncularia racemosa that
could be related to phenotypic plasticity and adaptation to high salinity.
Genetic studies have shown low genetic diversity of L. racemosa and
Avicennia schaueriana at the coast of Rio de Janeiro State that could be
aggravated by the continuous degradation of the mangroves. Also, there
is indication that restoration projects can deteriorate the genetic diversity
of both species even more. Restoration projects should be more careful
on the selection of seed matrix plants and on the methodology applied,
and have genetic evaluation to avoid long-term loss of diversity and
evolutionary capacity by changing the original genetic diversity level.
