
Plants deform organs in various situations. For example, when leaves are irradiated from the side, petioles twist to adjust the orientation of blades and enhance photosynthesis. Toward a quantitative understanding of such deformation, we implemented 3D quantification of twisting with geometric separation from bending. With this method, Arabidopsis petioles are shown to have a different spatial distribution of bending and twisting in response to lateral blue light irradiation.
