Become an expert in a specific animal group

In my laboratory, each student selects his/her own specific animal group as a research target. Utilizing the facilities of a laboratory in museum, our work is fundamentally rooted in taxonomic researches using the animal specimens. This is integrated with approaches from various disciplines—including molecular phylogenetics, ecology, developmental biology, and paleontology—to elucidate the evolution and diversity of the target taxonomic group. We actively engage in fieldwork through SCUBA diving and research cruises, with the goal of becoming a researcher capable of conducting laboratory work based on self-collected specimens and data. While our primary focus is on echinoderms, students are also capable of conducting their research on other marine invertebrates.
