A novel system for vascular cell differentiation using Arabidopsis

We established a novel system for vascular cell differentiation using the model plant, Arabidopsis. Here we show the Arabidopsis leaf disk cultured under the differentiation inducible condition. Blue stained cells indicate phloem cells visualized by using a GUS reporter. In addition, we can see tracheary elements, which possess a thick secondary cell wall, in the center. These suggest that mesophyll cells derived from Arabidopsis leaves transdifferentiate into xylem and phloem cells. Now, we are analyzing the mechanism controlling differentiation of vascular stem cells into xylem and phloem cells from molecular genetic approach.
