13:00~ Part 1 Basics of Physicochemical Plant Physiology
16:50~ Part 2 Diffusion of Carbon Dioxide and Water in a Leaf

In this lecture series, physical and chemical processes that form the basis of plant physiological processes will be introduced. Elementary chemistry, physics, and mathematics will be used to develop concepts that are key to understanding water relations, transpiration, respiration and photosynthesis.
An introduction to the concept of diffusion mass transfer will be given, with special attention to gas diffusion in the presence of chemical reactions. Several different approaches to analyze diffusion problems will be discussed. Subsequently, we will turn to convection and fluid transport through a porous medium, driven by hydrostatic pressure. These models form the basis for understanding plant water relations. Finally, models to describe light transmission, such as the Kubelka-Munk theory and ray tracing, will be explained. These will be used to understand the effect of anatomical features on light absorption in leaves.
Building on the basic theories introduced in the first part of the lecture series, the photosynthetic process in leaves will be discussed. Diffusion of carbon dioxide and water through stomata, intercellular airspaces and inside biological tissues in the leaf will be analyzed. Some attention will also be given to methods that use stable isotopes to evaluate the diffusion processes.
